Yin is the balance to the Yang in our lives. Whether we practice an engaging muscle focused Yoga, sport or simply the physical demands of lifestyles Yin yoga offers the body an opportunity to be less stiff.
Yin Yoga focuses on the softening and flexibility of the connective tissues fascia, ligaments and tendons and so increasing flexibility through the skeletal frame. As connective tissue is harder than muscle attempts at stretching these areas is best done slowly avoiding the enrolment of muscles. Hence props are often used to support the body during long held poses, allowing muscles to relax and the stretching to be focused through gravity in a surrendering manner. It is a gentle practice suited for any age or ability and no prior yoga learning is required.
Yin Yoga is most beneficial when practiced before the muscles warm-up allowing the stress of stretching to be more easily transferred to the connective issues so can be regarded as a fantastic way to ease the body into the day as well as a wonderful way to unwind at the end of the day.
